Below are
images of Native American chiefs, warriors & women as employed in the 19th,
20th and 21st century advertising of three major product groups: (1) fruits
& vegetables, (2) alcohol & tobacco, and (3) sports franchises.
Controversy has arisen over the years asserting that many (not
all) of these depictions are demeaning and disrespectful - a large number
having been appropriated without tribal consent or compensation. How else to
explain proud Native American images being used to promote the sales of
perfume, soda pop, paint, gasoline, brooms, insurance, popcorn, football &
baseball tickets?
As one modern day protest has it; "Indians are people - not mascots."
